The prison system had already warped him by then, and there was likely no going back. Then the last times we saw him he as bullying the timid French inmate with another group of Black guys. He also seemed to be rather aggressive towards his infant son, but I think the infant son was still okay as far as we knew. A scummy move, but his time in prison had probably messed with his mind, being around so much evil men and bad influences, as well as all the drugs he did. McManus tried helping Wangler out, and it helped for a little bit, but everything was back to square one again once Adebisi ruined everything by ripping apart Wangler's book and getting him addicted to drugs again.
